Erin C. Cowling B.A.H. LL.B.I am a former Bay Street litigator turned freelance lawyer and founder and CEO of a freelance lawyer platform, Flex Legal Network Inc.
After spending several years as an associate at a large national firm litigating corporate disputes, I briefly ventured into the world of estate litigation before becoming a freelance lawyer/legal writer at Cowling Legal Freelance. I founded Flex Legal when the demand for my freelance services quickly outpaced my availability. As a lawyer, I litigated a wide variety of claims including: shareholder disputes, oppression remedy claims, product liability claims, plans of arrangement, environmental claims, complex contract disputes, estate and trust claims, and fiduciary and power of attorney claims. I gained extensive experience researching and drafting legal memoranda and court documents and was able to appear at all levels of court, either as junior or lead counsel, including the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Quebec and Ontario Courts of Appeal, the Federal Court, and the Supreme Court of Canada. I am a member of the Law Society of Ontario (non-practicing), Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations (formerly elected member of the OBA Council), Toronto Lawyers Association, Women's Law Association of Ontario, the Advocates' Society and the Osgoode Society of Canadian Legal History. I was also honoured to have the role of Regional Alumni Advisor (Toronto) for the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law (2019-2021) and I was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law (teaching the first year Legal Research and Writing course)(2018-2020). I'm also a multiple winner of the Canadian Law Blog Awards (the Clawbies) and have been a nominee for:

The Fun Stuff
I am married to another lawyer and a mother to three children. I grew up in the country, but always told my parents I was a "city mouse". I now call Toronto home. When I am not reading or writing about the law, I am either baking with my kids, enjoying (or suffering through) a Blue Jays game, or reading a great detective novel.
